David Malmberg - comic ventriloquist
When David Malmberg takes the stage, he doesn’t come alone. Using the classic art of ventriloquism, David makes many very interesting and very funny characters come to life. It’s hard to believe these characters aren’t actually talking. David can make sounds and voices appear out of virtually anywhere. It’s a special treat to watch David work and watch a truly professional ventriloquist do his craft. David also happens to be a very accomplished classical guitarist. If your event calls for some background dinner music prior to the show, that can be arranged. Great music, great comedy, and great ventriloquism are all part of an evening with David Malmberg.
Biography
Born to a family of professional musicians, David Malmberg has had entertainment in his blood from the beginning. He remembers clearly the first time he saw ventriloquist Paul Winchell on TV and felt the first surge of desire to learn the art of ventriloquism. By the time he was 13, David was practicing voice throwing in the classroom much to the chagrin of his teachers! His parents eventually felt he had potential and purchased him a professional figure when he was 15. David began his entertainment career in earnest at this point and was busily performing at Blue and Gold Banquets and other community functions. According to David: “It was in those early years that I discovered the exhilaration of live performance.”
Later, David went off to serve his country in the United States Navy, and by necessity, this interrupted his voice tossing career. However, he continued these antics in boot camp with his fellow sailors. This eventually caught the attention of his superiors and he was assigned as a DJ for a couple of radio stations in the American Forces Radio network in Cuba and Spain. This serendipitous event gave David a platform to continue practicing his craft causing David to muse: “Edgar Bergen wasn’t the only ventriloquist on radio.” David also fondly recalls: “I used to ‘sign on’ the morning show in Spain. If I overslept, (which happened from time to time) the whole military base would oversleep with me because they all had their alarms set to the radio station!”
As a result of being in Spain, David also took up the classical guitar, studying with America Martinez Serrano from the Conservatory of Music in Seville. This was a very enriching period in his life and would serve him for many years as he parlayed his studies into recording and concert platforms. David has recently recorded his sixth CD to date. An avocation he continues to practice to this day.
About this time, David also decided to make music a part of his ventriloquist shown when he returned to the United States. But David also thought, “I should get a real job.” So he entered the broadcast business in Minneapolis, MN. This began a 20 year successful run as the operations director of radio stations K102 and WDGY in Minneapolis. David received many industry awards during this time including being named one of the ‘Top Ten Program Directors’ in America in 1990 by Inside Radio. It also gave him continued opportunities to practice voice characterizations on the radio and in hundreds of commercials.
Eventually though, the desire to experience “live performance” resulted in David stepping down from his post in the broadcasting business to pursue a career as an entertainer. David said, “They all thought I was crazy. You know, don’t give up your day job sort of thing.”
Well, crazy or not, for the past 15 years David has been crisscrossing the country with his show that features ventriloquism and music. At approximately 125 shows a year David estimates he has performed in front of more than a half million people. He has also had the pleasure of working with such greats as: Merle Haggard, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Juice Newton, BJ Thomas, The Statler Brothers and Kathy Mattea, to name a few.
In 2004 he was approached by Montgomery Press in Minneapolis and asked to write a book on ventriloquism. David said “yes” and the book “Secrets of Ventriloquism” is now in its second printing.
When asked about what drives him, David said, “Well, if you’re lucky, you find out your passion in life. For me, it is laughter and music. I have been fortunate enough to do both for a living.”
